Cette photographie a été prise par Mr Héraux, photographe de Charleville quelques jours aprés l' arrivée des américains à Mézieres, le 3 septembre 44 . On y voit un char Panther type A sabordé par ces derniers proprietaires. La photo a été prise devant le 4 rue d'Alsace ( oû j'ai habité de 1968 à 1991 ) . Le char fait face à la passerelle Bayard à environ 50 metres de la Meuse. Le char est resté un certain temps dans la rue , avant d'être découpé par un ferrailleur local. Je ne connait malheusement pas le nom de l'unité a laquelle il appartenait .

Most probably this is a Panther Ausf. A of I./SS-Panzerregiment 1. This unit was the only one in the Normandie campaign that hung extra tracks on the turret sides (a unit modification). Supporting this identification is the fact that on 2 September 1944 the I. SS-Panzerkorps tried to establish a defensive line here with the 1. Armee on its left with the pivot at Charleville. This Panther is facing west and no doubt covering the footbridge across the Meuse River.
